we’re on strike!

For the lot of us living in Calcutta, strike or ‘hartal’ has become a part of life just like regular power cuts, traffic snarls, defunct government etc.

In fact, Calcutta could officially be nicknamed the ‘strike capital of the world’. An inadvertent holiday with no choice left but to be confined indoors for fear of violence on the streets by unruly party workers. People cant go to work, train stations and airports are deserted, no cars on the streets, and field day for ‘gully’ cricket.

An elderly gentleman walks through the otherwise busy Gariahat market.

Boys play cricket on the main road since hardly any cars are out during the strike.

To play or not to play.

A rickshaw wallah carries a refrigerator and washing machine from one destination to another. Using regular mode of transport is calling for trouble.

A mid morning siesta.

Indoor games, outdoor.

Ample time for a shave, even if it means waiting in line.
